So, as you've likely noticed, I don't really post here anymore.  Not sure why - but it is what it is.  Anyhow, I'm doing a little experiment with Apple's MobileMe program, and will likely be using a page there as my blog from now on.  I'll post a link when I have one ...

The Seven Daughters of Eve

I recently finished reading The Seven Daughters of Eve by Bryan Sykes, and I must say - it's fascinating.

Sykes is a geneticist who, through studying mitochondrial DNA, has been able to determine that the vast majority of modern-day Europeans were descended from just seven women.  Sounds crazy and complicated, but he explains everything incredibly well, and even though I am far from being a "science person", I felt like I had a good idea of what he was talking about through the whole book. 

I highly recommend it if you're looking for some light-but-smart reading.

I recognize that you want to take your friend's picture.  However, taking said picture in the middle of a busy sidewalk, downtown, during rush hour?  Not a great idea.

On the federal benefits for gay partners issue ...

To quote Seth and Amy - Really?  Really.  Really?

First, how is this even an issue?  A partner is a partner, and partners get benefits.  Period.  

Second, I'm pretty sure the government's strategy is "keep ignoring and/or shortchanging gay people, and eventually they won't be gay anymore!"  Yeah, that will definitely work.  

I think it's great that Obama is offering benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.  But why the "stopping just short of full health benefits"?  That's insulting and just ridiculous.  Come on, Obama.  You already got elected; stop trying to play to the conservative voters and just be your awesome liberal self!
